Open-ended responses to suggestions about SIGAPL conferences
=====================================================================
Rating cost is tricky. I think that the costs are reasonable for most
conferences. Despite this, many people might not afford going. In my
case, I can no afford the trip if the conference is in Europe or
Australia.
However, I think that it is a great idea to have the conference in
different parts of the world. Even if I cannot go, I still benefit
from the conference through the proceedings. It is probably that many
APLers are in a similiar situation. Therefore, it would be difficult
to evaluate the succes of a conference only by considering the number
of attendees.
-----
Depends on location. NYC, CPH, SPB were great. Manchester & Sydney
had a bad price/value ratio.
-----
conferences need more emphasis on business and jobs.
-----
Sorry, I don't really want to think in detail about conferences. To
me a conference is a kind of one week vacation, where I can meet
like-minded people and generally do the British thing (i.e. get
drunk and make a lot of noise!) in good surroundings. Everything
else is a bonus.
-----
Too expensive for people paying their own way.
-----
How are [sic] Paris as European location?
-----
I appreciated student housing option, Circle Line cruise at APL89.
-----
Poor lecture style. Ideas develop too slowly, are not concrete
enough.
-----
Tutorials/workshops would be much higher on my list if the quality and
level were a good bit higher -- my impression has been that they are
introductory level, and not very well presented. Much the same is
true of the exchange s/w, but at least that I run once I get back home.

Toronto was good. Have more on US East Coast.
-----
APLxx on a cruise liner please.
-----
Convenient if visiting relatives. Expensive for a free-lancer.
-----
APL94 is the first one I have NOT attended in many moons, due to
its outrageous cost.
-----
More attendees = lower cost per attendee. Not enough acceptance
of apl in the market place for my company to pay for me to go.
Not enough job opportunities in APL for me to pay to go myself.
[comments continue in this vein at some length]

networking

Cost is a big problem for academicians. Software exchange dominated
by PC -- no unix.
-----
Not every year.
-----
Would less ambitious entertainment lower costs?
-----
Cheaper locations preferred.
