Well, you see, it's not *my* config.sys file. I am thinking about
upgrading my current laptop machine, on which APL2 runs fine,
and looked briedly at someone else's Thinkpad. Naturally, before
even considering the machine I wanted to see whether APL2 would run
on it, so I tried executing it off a diskette. I was disappointed that
it didn't work, but didn't have the time to try things to see if I could
get it to work. And of course the owner of the machine didn't really
want me mucking with his configuration.

If the Thinkpad is still on the list of candidates when I'm done looking
at alternatives, I'll try a little harder to discover the problem. Right
now I don't even know how to get my hands on a machine to continue the
experiment.
