For those of you who did not receive Iverson Software's May 1993
Newsletter, you may find the following of interest. Info on the
latest developments with J and APL and some stuff about APL `93.

New Windows Session Manager and Windows Driver available

                       for both J and APL

The new session manager is a single edit window, has a standard menu,
supports different fonts, and has improved line recall and editing
capabilities. You can now run multiple copies of J and APL.

The window driver is significantly improved. It supports all standard
window classes (button, edit box, listbox, combobox, scrollbar, etc.).
It also supports a graphics class in which all GDI drawing commands are
supported, a picture class which can display WWF, BMP, and ICO graphic
images, and an ole class which can display OLE objects that are connected
to servers such as Msgraph and Paintbrush. Ownerdraw buttons and listboxes
are also supported. APL and J can act as OLE clients and as DDE clients
 and servers.

(I'll mention this personal aside, if you are interested in interfacing your
financial J or APL applications with EXCELL or a database system, or
if you wish to encourage the development of low cost - high quality J/APL's
then you should upgrade. Gosh, someday Erik might even be able afford -:)
to get internet access. Anyone interested in prices can email me. The
prices BTW, haven't changed. They're still very affordable. )

 APL93

The following sample titles and partial abstracts from the forthcoming
APL conference in Toronto will illustrate the matter. ISI products are
featured in eight of the fifty sessions.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
 Modelling Petroleum Chemistry
in the Era of Clean Fuels

 Dr. Stephen B Jaffe.

A new approach called Structure Oriented Lumping (SOL) has been
developed which represents petroleum molecules as collections of
structural increments. APL plays a curcial role in every aspect
   of SOL.

The Role of APL and J in
 High-performance Computation

 Rober Bernecky.

Although multicomputers are starting to become feasible for solving
large problems, they are difficult to program: Extraction of
parallelism from scalar languages is possible, but limited. APL, J,
and other applicative array languages with adequately rich semantics can
   solve these problems.

 Identification of Parallelism in
Neural Networks by Simulations in the Language J

Alexei N. Skurihin and Alvin J. Surkan.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
ARDA: Expert System for Reliability Data Analysis
 Jake Ansell and Julhim Al-Doori.

APL Helps Deaf Person to Hear Again
 P. Deslauriers.

This paper demonstrates how APL can be an effective tool in the
world of research and development of electronic systems by
describing the use of APL in the research and development of a
   cochlear implant device.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
 JVOX
David G. Smith and Joey Tuttle.

It is easy to learn J; just talk to your computer. Voice recognition
technology is already on the desktop. You can use voice input to
bypass some common obstacles and promote gratifying and enjoyable
   experimentation with the language.

As an aside, ISI is expecting to have several booths at APL93.

They will be introducing French and Japanese versions of the
Introduction and Dictionary, and will be available to answer
questions you have about programming with their products.
