This was the first message posted to APL-L since I made the gateway
between APL-L and comp.lang.apl bidirectional. It appears to have been
injected into the UseNet newsgroup without any apparent problem.

Articles posted to comp.lang.apl are batched and once a day the
collection of articles is mailed to APL-L@UNBVM1.unb.ca for LISTSERV
distribution. Any articles which were posted to the newsgroup by the
gateway are removed from the batch.

The gateway has the address apl-l@jupiter.sun.csd.unb.ca. The gateway
is a subscriber to APL-L and will inject any articles received from the
list into the newsgroup unless the article came from the gateway. If
the gateway receives an article mailed directly to it, it will both
post the article in the newsgroup and mail it to the list.

As much as possible, the gateway attempts to retain information in the
headers of articles it receives to place in appropriate headers of the
other medium (news to mail, mail to news as appropriate.) Unfortunately
LISTSERV and news both have concepts not shared by the other and it is
not possible to give one to one mappings. One example is the
Organization: line which news uses but listserv does not. If the
gateway receives an article with an Organization: header line then it
will retain that information, otherwise, the Organization will appear
as it should in this article (to news readers, listserv readers will
not see an organization.)

Users of most news software can detect articles from the gateway by
looking at the path. The path of all articles from the gateway should
start with "Gateway.UNB.ca".

I appreciate any comments or criticisms.
