To: donald.mcintyre@almac.co.uk (Donald Mcintyre)

I received your message at 7:30 PM PST Thursday Jan 14th.

I'll let you know if I have any thoughts on the two subjects
Bernecky proposed for you.

Your weather conditions are severe, indeed. We're glad you've
survived. One of our newspapers describes the almost
unbelievably strong winds off the Shetlands, where the oil tanker
foundered last week: 250-pound people are blown off the cliffs to
their deaths in the ocean below. Here we are grateful for the
heavy rains that have been falling for the past two weeks, after
eight years of drought. The reservoirs are not yet full,
however, and the population increase of 30% over the last decade
makes it unlikely that the California water supply will ever be
able to meet the demand.

We converted our stove from electric to natural gas a year ago,
partially with the thought in mind that power outage wouldn't
mean we could no longer cook. We already heat the house by gas.

Arthur Whitney has moved to Palo Alto from New York, while
remaining as an employee (he's a vice president) of Morgan
Stanley. He'll be a welcome addition to the scene here. He is
beginning work on a successor language to the A he wrote a few
years ago. This one will be an ASCII language, like J.
Apparently Don Orth is cooperating with him on some points of the
language.

Roger Hui has been an employee of Morgan Stanley since December
1st and is now in London -- Ken tells me he can be reached at the
London office of Morgan Stanley at phone number 011 44 71513 7058
-- though I'm sure you wouldn't need all those preliminary
digits.

All is well with us here. Jeanne & I are taking a course in
Herodotus in Stanford's Continuing Studied Program, given by an
emeritus professor of history there, and enjoying it immensely.
My Jane Austen studies continue apace, and I continue my
involvement with J.

Thanks for the good wishes to us on the new year, and we'd like
to return them to you manyfold.
