J (and APL) will signal "NONCE ERROR" when you do something which in
theory should be OK, but which the interpreter can't handle "for the
nonce", that is, until the implementor(s) implement it. 

Yes, someone knows what J stands for, but he ain't saying.  OTOH, Ken is
giving a talk with the suggestive title "From I verson Notation to J".

"NB" is academic-ese for "please note" [ Latin, "nota bene"].
