To fix them, you'd have to replace each occurance of $: with the name
that the function is given.  For example,
 d=. '(r,0)+0,r=. $: y.-1'
 binomial=. (a;<d) : ''

The '$:' should be changed to 'binomial'

[By the way, maybe the old meaning of $: could be resurrected under
another name?]

   Are there any version 4.0 tutorials available, or nearly available?

Beats me..  Maybe you'd like to fix them and make them available to
L.J. Dickey?
