APL91 Update -- July 1991

APL91 Conference Office
Meeting Planning Associates, Inc.
883 Santa Cruz Avenue, Suite 30
Menlo Park, California 94025-4658
USA
Tel: 415-326-7781
Fax: 415-326-3945

Additional conference arrangements have been made since the APL91
invitation brochure was printed. Also, a couple of related
events are taking place the same week as the conference.
Registrations and information requests have been received from
North America, Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, the Middle East,
and Africa. Plans and interest promise a valuable conference.

Additional Invited Speakers

Ted Nelson, Sealing Our Data
Ted Nelson is Distinguished Fellow at Autodesk of Sausalito,
California, USA. He is the inventor of hypertext, and the
visionary behind the Xanadu hypermedia project. Why is Mr.
Nelson speaking at a conference where practicality is stressed,
as he is noted for his far-ranging visions, which many have
considered far beyond the bounds of possible implementation?
Because as the frontiers of processing and graphic power open
before us, Mr. Nelson's visions seem practical as never before.
The world of APL offers one pathway into these new frontiers,
with deep personal control of previously unreachable processes,
structures, and ideas.

William L. Scherlis, DARPA Software Activities and Opportunities
for APL
Dr. Scherlis is Executive Director (Software) at the Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Software and
Intelligent Systems Technology Office, Washington, D.C., USA.
This office is managing a research program in Software
Prototyping Technology that is addressing technology problems
related to prototyping languages, advanced environment and
process support for prototyping, and technology for multi-
language interoperability. Members of the APL community have
participated in activities of the DARPA-funded research community
addressing research problems related to component-oriented
software management approaches and to prototyping. Potential
areas of interaction between the APL community and the emerging
prototyping technology research community include, for example,
language and environment for software prototyping, multi-language
interoperability, and domain-specific tools and languages.

Local Celebrities from Outside the APL Community

Adam Osborne, of Osborne Computers and other ventures, will
moderate the entrepreneurs panel. Stan Kelly-Bootle, author and
contributing editor to UNIX Review and Computer Language,
has a strong interest in APL and will participate on the modes of
thought panel.

Panels

Modes of Thinking and Their Implications for APL: Distinguished
APL enthusiasts will discuss the relationships between APL and
brain hemisphere research, parallel vs. serial thinking, and
similar concepts, both as positive and negative influences on
APL.

APL as an Entrepreneurial Tool: An international group of
entrepreneurs will discuss their experiences developing a
business using APL to create a product or service for the world
outside APL.

Is J a Dialect of APL?: Advocates of J and APL will debate this
question, on the level of syntax and semantics, but also on
broader issues of functionality and goals.

Creators of APL: A 25-Year Perspective. Seven of the original
creators of APL will review highlights (and perhaps little-known
stories) of APL's origins, and discuss how APL led them to where
they are today and where it might take all of us tomorrow.

Additional Tutorial Teachers

Andreas Geyer-Schulz, Vienna University of Economics and Business
Administration, will teach "An Introduction To Financial
Accounting With APL2". This tutorial is included in the regular
conference program.

Ray Polivka, of IBM and co-author of two APL textbooks, will
teach "An Introduction to APL" on Sunday. This tutorial is being
advertised to programmers in the Silicon Valley area.

Other Arrangements

Five vendors are presenting vendor forums to discuss product
developments. Several posters are included in the final program.
The status of APL standards will be reported, APL92 will be
previewed, and awards for outstanding achievement in APL will be
presented. A font table will show APL fonts on both PC and
Macintosh platforms. An APL museum will celebrate this
anniversary year with a display of APL memorabilia and trivia,
loaned by members of the APL community.

Related Events

Stanley Jordan in Concert
Stanley Jordan, a top-selling jazz guitarist who uses APL in
music composition, and who went to high school in Palo Alto, is
joining a group of musicians for "The Gathering II", an outdoor
concert in Frost Amphitheater on the Stanford campus, Sunday, 4
August, 1:00 p.m. until dusk. Chair seating is $25, lawn seating
is $20. Tickets can be ordered ahead of time through BASS, a
local ticketing agency, at telephone (415) 762-BASS or (408) 998-
BASS. Credit cards are accepted for ordering. Mr. Jordan will
also be presenting an invited paper at APL91.

STSC APL*PLUS Users' Conference
STSC, Inc. is holding a users' conference on 8-9 August at the
Holiday Inn in Palo Alto. Users will share experiences in
developing and supporting APL*PLUS applications, discuss emerging
trends in hardware and software technology, and discuss the
future direction of APL*PLUS technology. For details, contact
STSC at telephone (800) 592-0050 from inside the USA, (301) 984-
5412 from outside the USA, or fax (301) 984-5094.

See you at Stanford for APL91!
