 The first such scheme that I ever saw was the one used on the IBM 1130, about
1970. Keywords began with an at-sign I think (@), and were designed to allow
punched-card input of APL expressions.

 That's a long time ago, and I don't remember it clearly. Eric (Iverson) may
remember it more clearly, since he did some of the work on that APL
implementation (or maybe someone still has some documentation on the system).
[David Bonyun is another possibility, as he used that APL in some teaching
projects and is a bit of a packrat].
